These sweet persimmons, the Fuyu persimmons (also called Kaki and Sharon persimmon), really do make this smoothie so wonderfully creamy.
How come?
Because they contain lots of water-soluble fiber.
And adding nettles makes this beverage soo nutritious.
This smoothie is quick, simple and DELICIOUS!
You can substitute with Hachiya persimmons, they taste just as yummy! They are a bit more oblong than the Fuyu persimmons and sweet & jucy when ripe.
Just make sure they are completely ripe though. They should be soft to the touch, like when gently squeezing a ripe tomato. Otherwise they will be very astringent and quite unedible since they contain high levels of tannins.
Ingredients
3 ripe persimmons, or the Fuyu/Kaki variety
1 large juicy orange
A handful of lettuce and some herbs, like cilantro, melissa, mint, or parsley.
Nettle leaves
1 cup pure water
Blend the above to a thick and creamy texture.
Tip
Just use a few nettle leaves when you start making this smoothke. Then add more once you are used to this “weed”. Pick the leaves with gloves or use paper towels.
In the beginning of the season the leaves are quite tender and taste the best, but become more bitter and harsh as the nettle grows.
