I just finished a 36 hour waterfast with a juicy apple.
And that apple tasted incredibly delicious!
A lot actually happened in this short period of time. Well the time was not really that long, just 36 hours, but if you haven’t fasted before, 36 hours without food or filling drinks can seem long, even very long. Then it would be good to have “a hand to hold”.
Water fast or juice fast?
What is then the difference between a water fast and a juice fast? A water fast is a real fast. A juice fast is more like a liquid diet or a calorie-reduced diet. Water fasting is like the name says a diet on water only and no other drinks (or food) for a period ranging from one day to a few weeks.
There is also something called juice feasting. Then you drink as much juice as you want and that diet is the easiest and the most gentle of the three. But also the one that gives the least effect during the same time period. Suitable for those who cannot do a regular fast.
Length of a fast
The water fast and the juice fast are different types of fasts with regards to the “foods” / beverages consumed. But there are also different types of fasting where you differentiate them according to the length of time they last. There is intermittent fasting, “halfway” fasting and therapeutic fasting. What is then the difference between them?
An intermittent fast means reducing the number of hours during which you eat. You limit the hours of the day during which you eat food. A method called LeanGains, the so-called 8:16 method, advocates eating only for a maximum of 8 hours of 24 hours. Then you fast for the remaining 16 hours.
Another one, the so-called 5:2 method, is also based on this principle of periodic fasting and according to it, you eat a limited amount of calories during 2 of the week’s 7 days.
Half way fast
A fast of 2-4 days can be called a half way fast. For now, you are on the threshold of achieving ketosis. Ketosis is a condition where the liver releases ketone bodies into the blood and the body begins to burn fat instead of stored glucose. In some health conditions, you are advised to not to fast at all. But most people can safely fast themselves at home with some guidance.
Therapeutic / medical fast
Longer fasts, which lasts 5-21 + more days, are therapeutic or medical fasts and they should only be carried out in an institution specialized for this.
Of the various fasting methods, all of which are water fasting, I advocate the 36-hour fast. It is quite easy to add to everyday life without any major sacrifices. As long as you are healthy with minor ailments you should easily handle such a fast without any problems. In some health conditions, like diabetes, you are advised to not fast at all. The 36-hour fasting stretches the limits for a periodic fasting and if done right, one can achieve many advantages not attained with a shorter one.
It’s also the fast I’m leading on Raw Food Magic, a closed Facebook group where I’m the only one adding participants / members. There you will see information on preparation, how to finish a fast, what to expect, and what you should not do during ta fast. It’s also a nice forum for anyone who fasts together with On The Lime.
Fast – you too?!
Once you are aware of the many benefits that can actually be achieved on such a short water fast, as well as the best tips on how to proceed in the easiest and most flexible way, you might want to try yourself and experience the many benefits. Possibly you have fasted before and feel it’s time to do it again. Let the body and the digestion rest. Cleanse and heal. Perhaps you want to make it a habit to regularly fast a few times a year, especially in spring and fall.
